Dental Exams and Check-ups In Newark CA

Maintaining optimum oral hygiene is one of the most important aspects of our overall health. Failing to do so can have a negative effect on other systems of our body (blood pressure, diabetes, heart conditions, respiratory disorders, etc. are found to have a connection with oral health).

Importance of oral hygiene

No matter how well we brush our teeth, bacteria will be left back on our teeth. Over time, they keep multiplying and form plaque and tartar deposits on the teeth. Tartar is known to be one of the major factors to negatively influence oral health as it can lead to cavities, gum diseases, halitosis, etc. This is why dentists give so much of importance to regular oral cleaning (scaling and root planing).

What is Scaling and Root Planing?

Scaling is the process of getting rid of the plaque and tartar deposits from the surface of the teeth. We use a hand-held ultrasonic scaling device for this purpose, which dislodges the tartar deposits by vibrating at ultrasonic frequencies. Root planing is similar to scaling, but the difference being it is performed on the root surfaces. Local anesthesia may be used for this purpose as the scaling device will be inserted in between the root surface and the gums. Oral cleaning considerably reduces the chances of contracting oral infections and gum diseases.

Dental exams

Dental exams help us to evaluate your present oral health thoroughly and provide suggestions on how to improve it. Also, they allow us to check for any hidden infections, cavities, dormant oral cysts and tumors, signs of oral cancer, etc. and treat them as soon as possible for better results. Sometimes, when we sense underlying issues in the mouth, we may also take scans and x-rays of the mouth that give us a better view of the tissues, teeth, and bone that isn’t visible to the naked eye.

What can you do at home?

Apart from visiting a dental practice for regular oral consultations, patients can work towards maintaining better oral health at home. The simplest and most important thing to do is to brush and floss at least twice a day. This gets rid of the majority of the microbes from the mouth, thereby reducing the chances of developing cavities, teeth stains, gum diseases, bad breath, etc. Also, keep the consumption of sugary food to a minimum. Even if you do eat something, make sure to rinse your mouth with water thoroughly.
