Periodontitis is one of the most serious gum diseases that can have a significant impact on one’s oral health and aesthetics. Thousands of Americans get diagnosed with some sort of gum disease every year. Surprisingly, more than three-quarters of them get diagnosed with it at least once in their lifetime, and sadly, only 3% of them get treated for it at the right time.
Periodontitis is most often caused due to the accumulated plaque and tartar on the surface of the teeth. The microbes in the deposits release harmful acids that can infect the gums and lead to their decay. Other causes include external trauma to the gums that goes untreated, poor oral health, root canal infection, etc.
